Many Christians today seem to shy away from knowledge, wisdom, learning, education and life philosophy. The usual reason is the false ideology that the starting point of a believer, conversion, is their final destination in this life for that believer. Nothing can be further from the truth. As Christians, those redeemed by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, our conversion is the starting point. It is the beginning of a new life, one in which our mind is transformed unto the likeness of Christ Jesus.

To put it simply your epistemology is your theory of knowledge, i.e. how you know what you know. So what does this have to do with the Christian faith and life, I hear you asking? Well, I think it plays a vital role in our lives; how we understand the universe. In our modern age of empirical materialism we tend not to try and investigate the framework upon which we understand our everyday experiences in life. Your theory of knowledge undergirds how you make sense of the universe (or the metaphysical realm). Let me give you some quick examples of poor theories of knowledge:

  1. Within the Hindu theory of knowledge all is maya. In other words all is illusion. And eventually we wake up out of the illusion to realise that we are actually one with god, we are god. Now if we take this theory of knowledge (all is illusion) and apply it to our experiences of life what do we find? Well, if all is illusion then your wallet is mine and I can help myself to the contents! Stop and think about it, if all is illusion why would anyone pay for their shopping? And ultimately how does a Hindu actually know that their theory of all being an illusion isn't an illusion itself? This seems to be an absurd way to look at reality!

  2. On the other hand, the atheist believes there is no god and all that exists is the material realm (i.e. things that you can touch, smell, see etc). Therefore, you cannot prove anything unless it can be done empirically (i.e. by observation). So, let us ask how does an atheist explain logic? Have you ever seen, felt, smelt, etc the laws of logic? I hope you agree that you can't. These types of universal laws are not in the material realm. Does this mean they simply do not exist because we can't prove them empirically? Absolutely not, I can assure you that one of the major tools that atheists use to attack Christianity is logic itself. So even though the atheistic theory of knowledge assumes that we are all a collection random molecules colliding and moving through space, atheists employ universal principles such as the laws of logic whenever they please. If we are simply random molecules then why are the laws of logic always constant (i.e. universal)? Why do they not change? Or to be even more simplistic, why does an atheist believe in the principle of deduction? If all things are random particles why do atheist scientists conduct experiments upon the understanding that mixing chemicals in certain proportions will always produce a certain outcome? Why does hydrogen and oxygen mixed molecularly correctly always constitute H20? Why don't we get chloride sometimes, blood other times and water occasionally? Well, because of the uniformity of the universe. Everyone believes this and then uses principles of deduction to experiment! But this does not make sense if all we are is random molecules!

These are simplistic analyses. Much more can be said but I will save that for another day. My point is that many, many people do not actually believe the theory of knowledge that they defend religiously. Hindus do not promote stealing or that their theory is simply an illusion. Atheists squeeze the toothpaste tube every morning (I hope) expecting toothpaste to come out until the tube is finished! Why, why, why?

Is it not clear, they use bits and pieces of the Christian theory of knowledge and then deny and vehemently oppose Christianity! All people have ultimate assumptions upon which they base all of their beliefs (yes even atheists). Ultimate assumptions cannot be empirically proven. That is why they are called first principles. They are used to prove the validity of the theory itself! This is circular reasoning (for you logicians). At first principles all theories of knowledge are circular. These ultimate assumptions are what we use to interpret the facts presented to us in the universe. As Christians we must be able to answer, as Christ did, that our ultimate assumptions are what is written in the Scriptures. Our bedrock is "every that proceeds from the mouth of God" ( Matt 4:3-5). When we understand that our duty is to cast "down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ we are to demolish every lofty thought" ( 2 Cor 10:5) we are thinking in the right direction. Knowing that we can trust the Scriptures because they are God's word is the first step in glorifying God in all (1 Co 10:31). We must not fear wisdom that is not rooted in the fear of the Lord (Pro 1:7).

All false beliefs use bits and pieces of the truth and then ultimately and vainly deny the truth itself. Christians do not need to leave their mind at the door of church. All Christians have been given the ability to think rationally and logically and therefore we are not to be foolish in answering objections to the truth of Christianity. At the same time we must be equipped or ready to answer objections by revealing the spiritual foolishness of the objections raised (Pro 26:4-5). Christians need to be willing to gain understanding, knowledge and wisdom through starting with the fear of God, which is to hate evil (Pro 8:13). In Christ we are more than conquerors. Know and understand that Biblical epistemology is the only theory of knowledge that makes sense of every experience in life. The Christian can confidently explain universal principles, evil/good, logic, deduction, etc if he believes in the authority of the Scriptures.

Christians, remain faithful to the foundation of Scripture for all thinking. The Bible is the bedrock for critical and logical thought. Reason is established on faith. Our epistemology is to be based upon the Rock of Ages. Assert the Bible as your ultimate assumptions, look at the world from that stand point and know that all else is utter foolishness ( Psalm 14:1 & 53:1).
